Food Guide in Chiang Mai

Eating out

Restaurant
There are many retaurants in Chiang Mai both modern and old style. And many people always come here to experience the delicious food. There are many various kinds of food and restaurant which you no need to worry about finding palatable dishes.

Local Restaurant
One place that you touch the feeling and atmosphere of Thai is local restaurant. Actually, it’s not suitable calling “restaurant” because Chiang Mai people might think it’s just the small shop selling a few food and very cheap price.

Luxury Restaurant
Chiang Mai has both Thai and international luxury restaurant in town and suburb. There are many Japanese, French, European, Italian, Chinese and etc., provided in Chiang Mai. You won’t disappoint to find the suitable place for yourselves.

Local Food
Every part of Thailand has own style and traditional food. Chiang Mai local food is very famous and popular in Thailand. And surely it’s easy to find, not only in Chiang Mai. It’s hard to say that you come here and you have not tried the northern Thai cuisine yet. I believe that if you taste then you might be love with it. I am one person who’s not getting bored if I eat the northern food.

Papaya Salad , Som Tam
or Som tum (Thai: ส้มตำ, IPA: [sôm ɗam])
Som Tum is quite simple to make. The main ingredients are green papaya, green beans, tomoato, dried prawns, unsalted roasted peanuts, chillies, garlic and lime juice. Pounded together in a mortar using a pestle. The sound it makes is "pok pok".

Som Tum (papaya salad) is best served with sticky rice and grilled chicken. That is the way I like it. But you can have fish instead.

When you come to buy Papaya Salad, it is nearly always prepared in front of you. This way you can tell them how many spicies you want! I like mine hot. Papaya Salad with sticky rice from a roadside stall will cost you about 25-30 baht.

How to order noodle

-  Crispy Pork Rind (Kaeb-Moo)

Kaeb-Moo is very popular food which eats with sticky rice and every kind of Thai paste. When you visit to many street stalls in Chiang Mai, you may find many of the stalls dedicated to selling what looks like a heap of deep fried intestines of some sort. I recommend all of you to buy and taste it. Kaeb Moo is actually made from either pork skin or triple pork, fried with salt, clove, garlic, and crushed whole coriander stalks. It is not exactly a healthy snack. But if you can get passed that, it is actually quite delicious. Most stall holders will also be more than happy to give you a taste sample.

Nam-Prik-Num (Thai Finger Chili Paste)
If you have chance to visit to the northern part of Thailand, one kind of fast food you don’t want to miss is “Num-Prik-Num”. You might be worried that it’s very spicy. Surely it’s spicy but not too strong. We always served with boiled or fresh vegetables, Kaeb-Moo, and sticky rice. If you like it, you can cook it by yourselves because it’s not difficult to cook and importantly you can keep it for a long time by frozen it.

-  Kao-Soi (Chiang Mai Style Curry Noodle)

Does anybody like noodle? I really like it. If you taste Chinese and Japanese or even Thai noodle, I would like to recommend you one kind of Chiang Mai noodle that you have never found before. It’s amazing and different dish I have ever seen. You can order Kao-Soi with chicken, pork, beef, or meat balls. And it’s very tasty, if we eat with pickled vegetable and red onion. Now let’s try it.

International food
It’s not surprised to see many international foods in Chiang Mai such as Japanese, European, France, Chinese, Italian and more. So you will see the varieties of many kinds of cuisine in here. And you can choose to be in luxury or local international shops. And about taste, if you want to know, you have to figure out by yourselves. Then you won’t disappoint what I said.

Just take it easy, and you’re going to love Chiang Mai.
