Temples in Chiang Mai City (Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Prasingh, Wat Pan Tao)
Detail
The city of Chiang Mai has a wealth of beautiful and historic Buddhist Wats (temples)
Wat Chedi Luang, located in the center of the old city wall, is home to the highest pagoda in the northern part of Thailand. It is over 500 years old. At the base of the pagoda there is a tunnel. According to legend, it was built by King Tilokarach to be used as a secret passage way for kings to flee enemies. It is also said that there is a kind of mechanism that will punish those who do not have virtue to enter the tunnel. The temple later built an iron gate forbidding people in. What a shame!
Only a few people know of Wat Pan Tao, a small interesting temple located close to Wat Chedi Luang. Many call Wat Pan Tao a “stamp” of Wat Chedi Luang because it is small and located in a small corner of Wat Chedi Luang.
The chapel of Wat Pan Tao is over a hundred years old, very small and built entirely of teak wood. A magnificent model of a peacock carved out of teak wood adorns above the entrance of the viharn. Don’t miss Wat Pan Tao.
