Chiang Mai’s annual Inthakin ceremony will be held at Wat Chedi Luang temple. The temple is home to another Chiang Mai monument, the "Pillar of the City"; a totem used in ancient Thai fertility rites. The religious Inthakin ceremony is a traditional Buddhist rite which presents and celebrates the Buddha image Phra Chao Fon Saen Ha, an image believed to have the power to bring rain to produce fertile agricultural conditions. People wanting to make merit will worship the statue and bathe the image with fragrant water, as well as offer flowers for the monks’ alms. During the ceremony at Wat Chedi Luang, nine monks will worship the city’s pillar, located below the Buddha image. The ceremony will be followed by a fair in the temple.
